How Time was personified in 'The Song of the Woman of My Land'.

Time is presented in the poem ‘The Song of the Woman of my Land’ as quite powerful. Discuss.

The poem ‘The Song of the Woman of my Land’ reflects the collective gain and aspiration of women in the development of their family and community. The poem centered on themes such as oppression of women, endurance, pain and importance of music. The poem can be considered a dirge because it is a lamentation of women who have dead and left behind their lyrics of their song. A dirge is a song of mourning about pain, death and funeral. The poem is characterized by pain, sadness, sorrow and regret.

The power highlights the importance and power of time, the poet is of the opinion that time brought a negative change in the lives of people in the community and makes people forget the memories of the lyrics of the women in the poem. Time ‘chisels away’ the memory and the lyrics of the song of the women of the persona’s land. It leaves a fading tune and a dying song instead. This shows that time is presented in a negative light in the poem.

Throughout the poem the poet seems to present time in a powerful way because of what time has done to the lyrics of the song of the women. Time has made people to forget the song of this women and giving poet nothing to write about these women. The poet considers time as a tyranny but which, fortunately, the women are able to cheat through singing.

Time is also given the attribute of a sculptor who uses chisels to construct his art. This shows how important the poet considers time. The women engage in song to tell stories of their lives. They use song to serve as a therapeutic purpose; with their song the women were able to survive the individual psychological torture and communicate with the future unborn, but unfortunately the legacies that the lyrics of the women song would have left for the generation unborn has been eroded as a result of time.

The poet stated that time has ‘stripped of lyrics like a scorned ghost’ and therefore leaving a fading tune and making both poet and people generally to forget the roles of these women in building and upholding their community, this serves as a negative role time played in the lives of the women.
